How to Clean DEF Transfer Pumps
Proper cleaning helps reduce contamination and keeps your system ready for service.
Use dedicated tools and deionized or distilled water to clean DEF pump components, then flush with DEF before returning the system to use.
Cleaning DEF Transfer Pumps & Accessories
Cleaning a DEF transfer pump primarily involves addressing crystallization and contamination. Never use harsh chemicals, solvents, or cleaning agents, as these can contaminate the DEF and damage pump components.
General Cleaning Principles:
Use Dedicated Equipment: Always use cleaning tools, brushes, and containers that are dedicated to DEF.
Use Deionized Water or Distilled Water: The safest and most effective cleaning agent for DEF system components is deionized water (DI water). This is because DEF is 67.5% deionized water, and DI water won’t introduce impurities. Distilled water is also acceptable for cleaning DEF transfer pump equipment such as pump heads, nozzles, and valves.
Steps for Cleaning a DEF Transfer Pump:
1. Disconnect Power
Ensure the pump is disconnected from any power source before cleaning.
2. Clean External Surfaces
- Wipe down the exterior of the pump, hoses, and nozzle with a clean, damp cloth soaked with warm water.
- Pay close attention to any areas with visible white crystallization. The warm water will help dissolve the crystals.
3. Drain the System
If possible, drain any remaining DEF from the pump, hoses, and other components.
4. Address Internal Crystallization/Clogs
- Remove hoses from the pump, nozzle, and tank coupler. Examine the system for crystallization and clogs.
- Gently rinse any internal components you can safely access with deionized or distilled water. Use a soft brush (dedicated to DEF) if needed to dislodge stubborn crystallization.
Note: GPI DEF Pumps are not designed for user disassembly, and attempting to do so could void warranties or cause further damage.
5. Flush the Pump, accessories and hoses:
- Once visible crystallization is removed from the pump and accessories, you can rinse the system out by reconnecting them and running warm water through the system to flush loose debris from internal passages. Next, rinse the system out with distilled or deionized water. Finally, flush the cleaning fluids out by running DEF through the system prior to returning the pump to dispensing service.
6. Dry Thoroughly
- Allow all components to air dry completely, or gently wipe them dry with a clean, lint-free cloth. Residual water (especially tap water) can lead to future contamination.
7. Reassemble and Refill
- Reassemble the pump system. Ensure that all seals and connections are secure.
- Refill the DEF tank with fresh, high-quality, API-certified DEF.
